Board hears roadway rehabilitation updates; staff flags extensive base repair needed on Eden-area streets

City public-works staff updated the Board of Public Works on June 16 about this year’s roadway rehabilitation and maintenance work, reporting near-term progress on crack sealing, active milling and base patching in the Carrington Woods subdivision, and a potential scope change after discovering severe base failure in the Eden/Brentwood area.

Staff said crews have replaced curb and gutter in Carrington Woods, will patch and then mill the roadway there, and expect to start paving after base repairs. The crack-sealing contract is complete citywide, and Waukesha County has begun pavement marking, which staff said allows markings to remain uncovered by later maintenance.

Regarding the Brentwood Drive, Raymond Court, Eden Trail and Eden Court area, staff described unexpectedly poor base material after pulverizing the pavement. Staff initially said they anticipated excavating about 25% of the base material but later stated the work may require removing nearly all of the existing base in some locations. "If you've been through there, it's kind of like, off road driving," a staff member said, describing the rutting and unstable material. Staff said they expect to remove failed base and replace it with crushed limestone; the additional work may force the department to reduce scope on other planned streets this year, including Julius Heil Drive and Racine Place, to keep higher-priority projects such as Springdale Road on the schedule.

Staff also reported that the Moreland Road project remains on track but noted the contractor's schedule extends into December, which staff said is a concern for timely completion. No formal actions or votes were taken on the updates; the Board received the reports and no objections were recorded.
