Committee approves MOU to designate ARC as student reunification site with New Berlin School District

The Committee of the Whole on June 10 voted unanimously to recommend that the common council approve a memorandum of understanding between the City of New Berlin and the New Berlin School District establishing the Activity and Recreation Center, the ARC, as a designated student reunification site.
The MOU sets out terms for using the ARC as a location to reunify students with families in the event of an emergency at a school. A committee member asked whether the district had an alternate plan; the discussion noted the MOU provides a fallback facility in case an incident requires off-site reunification.
City staff said the emergency manager (EM) and school officials have coordinated on the plan. The motion to recommend approval carried unanimously; committee members said the arrangement is intended to improve preparedness and may never be used but is prudent given national incidents involving school emergencies.
The committee did not amend the MOU during the meeting and sent the recommendation to the common council for final approval.
