Commission approves courthouse dumpster enclosure, sidewalk repairs and upgraded courthouse cameras

The Codington County Board of Commissioners approved concrete and security projects for county facilities on Tuesday, including a dumpster enclosure by the courthouse, sidewalk repairs at the Extension Complex, floor work and epoxy at Memorial Park structures, and an upgraded courthouse camera system.
A staff member described the courthouse enclosure proposal: “The slab would be put all the way up to the shed and then wall built around that to block off anything from disrupting the courthouse for any kind of issue.” The board approved the enclosure, a six-foot concrete wall and slab, for $7,853.08.
The board also approved replacement of crumbling sidewalk gutters at the Extension Complex ($1,836.74) and concrete work under a picnic shelter plus interior floor and fireplace infill work at Memorial Park ($5,540.84). Each project was described as budgeted and motions to approve carried unanimously.
Separately, the commission approved a courthouse camera upgrade package priced at $38,705.40. County staff said the upgrade will add higher-resolution and zoom-capable cameras at multiple courthouse entrances, in the lobby and on upper floors so events in public areas are recorded. The sheriff’s department indicated a UJS (Unified Judicial System) credit of $9,950 would offset part of the cost.
All projects were presented as budgeted items and commissioners voted to approve each project without amendments. The county indicated the UJS credit will reduce the net county expense for the camera upgrades.
