Burke County commissioners voted to approve a memorandum of agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation to replace two bridges on Thompson Bridge Road at Briar Creek and to commit $50,000 in county funds toward the project. At the same meeting, the board approved a certification that the county is not a sanctuary jurisdiction, a requirement tied to the GDOT funding.
County staff told commissioners GDOT will bid and manage the bridge replacements; "The only thing it would cost Burke County is $50,000," a presenter said. The board approved the memorandum of agreement by motion and second; the motion was made by Commissioner Nicks and seconded by Commissioner Kelly.
Separately, the board approved the required "no sanctuary" policy certifying the county's compliance with immigration‑related reporting conditions in order to receive state transportation funds. A commissioner noted the county already complies with the state's reporting requirements; the motion to adopt the certification was made by Commissioner Bridal and seconded by Commissioner Lively and passed unanimously.
County officials described the local share as modest compared with the full project cost and said GDOT will handle bidding and construction oversight. No detailed project schedule or total cost estimate was announced at the meeting; staff said participation would allow GDOT to manage procurement for the replacements.
The combined actions approve the county’s financial participation and the administrative certification necessary to secure the state grant for the bridge work.
