Fort Myers Beach opens five bids for water meter replacement project

The Town of Fort Myers Beach opened bids July 9 for an Invitation to Bid labeled ITB 25-05-PW to replace and standardize the town’s water meters, town procurement staff said.
The bid opening, led by Deb Lavin, the town’s contract and procurement specialist, showed five complete bids. “The town plans to replace and standardize all water meters to a single meter encoder receiver transmitter,” Mark Ashkin, the town’s utilities manager, said during the opening. The combination meter is an ERT device that will allow the town to collect meter readings remotely and upload the data.
Deb Lavin read the bids aloud. The lowest reported bid was $1,505,044.82 from Utilities 1. Other bids included Vanguard Utility Service at $1,641,624.02, Ackermann Plumbing at $2,151,710.00, Cathcart Construction at $3,881,160.03, and National Meter Service (amount reported in the transcript appears garbled and is listed below as not fully specified). Lavin said she apologized in advance for any mispronunciations of company names.
Lavin said the next step is a review of the ITB and a recommendation to the town manager, with the item to be brought to the Fort Myers Beach Town Council on Aug. 4 for consideration. “The successful bidder will be the lowest qualified, responsible, and responsive company,” Lavin said. No award or contract decision was made at the bid-opening meeting.
The meeting was brief; the procurement staff opened the sealed bids, confirmed completeness, and adjourned. Further technical review and qualification checks are expected as part of the procurement process before any contract is awarded.
