South Boulder Recreation Center pool set for summer repairs; city will try to keep rest of building open

City of Boulder staff told the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board a package of repairs at the South Boulder Recreation Center is slated for this summer and may require an extended pool closure while work is underway.
Megan Lohman, senior manager for recreation, told the board that bids were issued for work that includes pool replastering, installation of large fans to improve aquatics-area air circulation, HVAC repairs and a full repaint of the pool area. She said the pool replastering requires draining and scaffold installation and that the replaster is done just before refill so the finish sets properly.
On timing and operations, staff said they have identified a summer window that would be least disruptive to outdoor and system pool availability; Lohman said, “We would intend to keep the rest of that building operational while the pool is [closed for extensive repair work],” noting the department will communicate closures in advance and coordinate with stakeholders.
The repairs are funded as short-term capital to extend the facility’s life while longer-term options are evaluated in the needs assessment. Staff emphasized they will share schedules and stakeholder communications as firm dates are set; no formal board vote or policy decision was required at the meeting itself.
