Brockton shifts Barrett Russell pre‑K sessions earlier to use district vans and reduce private transportation costs
Summary
Superintendent Dr. Priya Teheliani described a schedule change for Barrett Russell pre‑K sessions that she said will allow the district to use its own vans with appropriate car seats, avoid private vendor transportation, reduce costs and increase consistency; union input and professional development scheduling were part of planning.

The Brockton School Committee on July 8 heard details about a scheduling change at Barrett Russell designed to allow the district to use its internal fleet for pre‑K transportation and reduce reliance on private vendors.
Superintendent Dr. Priya Teheliani said the Barrett Russell AM session will now run from 8:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., and the PM session from 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. She said the adjustment moves sessions earlier and enables the district to use vans already outfitted with car seats and run by district drivers rather than contracting private transportation.
"We expect not only some cost savings, but obviously, we believe this to be safer because they're our own internal fleet, our own internal bus drivers," Teheliani said. She said the schedule change was communicated to staff and families and that the district worked with the union on the plan before distribution.
Teheliani said pre‑K teachers districtwide will participate in full professional development days on district‑designated in‑service days and that Barrett Russell will use district leaders to assist with school‑based professional learning. She added that when pre‑K was moved to tier 3 previously, the district had been required to seek private transportation; the schedule adjustment reverses that need for the Barrett Russell site.
Committee member Jorge Vega asked for a plain explanation of what the change means for families; Teheliani repeated the new times and emphasized the safety and fiscal reasons.
The committee praised the effort to leverage internal resources. Teheliani said she would provide additional operational details and that the change is posted on the district website for families.
