Butte-Silver Bow delays boundary changes for special districts pending outreach and timing review

On July 9 the Judiciary Committee addressed two separate resolutions of intent to alter special-district boundaries in Butte-Silver Bow: one to expand the solid waste special district to include Homestake Meadows 2 subdivision, and another to add the 3 MCT District to the county Fire Services District. Both items were not advanced at this meeting; the solid waste boundary resolution was held pending a public hearing scheduled for the same night, and the fire services boundary resolution was noted and placed on file while county staff conduct outreach.
For the fire services district matter, committee members referred to testimony from Fire Services Director Osborne at a prior meeting and noted timing considerations. County Attorney Matt Enruth recommended slowing the process to allow face-to-face meetings with district residents and said the change is "too late for it to take effect for next year's taxable purposes. So we can slow roll this a bit and do some face to face meetings with some people out there in that district to let them know this is what we're looking at doing and this is why." Commissioner Thatcher moved to note and place on file the fire services resolution (2025-33); the motion passed.
The committee left both items at the committee/filing stage to permit outreach and to align any boundary changes with tax-year timing and further public hearings.
