Superintendent previews summer programs, curriculum work and $10 million in capital projects; student ex officio seats to begin in September

Superintendent Dr. Ken Buckner told the Great Neck Union Free School District Board of Education the district is running summer school and enrichment programs, continuing curriculum-writing and professional development and advancing approximately $10 million in capital projects across the district.
Buckner said the district’s summer work includes curriculum writing, continuing restorative-practices training and partnerships with universities for music, media literacy and Holocaust remembrance curriculum development. He said a planned study trip portion was postponed but the curriculum work continues with external partners.
Facilities work for the coming weeks includes 13 projects totaling about $10,000,000 that are in various stages of engineering and state approval. The superintendent identified the North High library renovation as a major project for this summer and said parking-lot work, HVAC improvements, bathroom renovations and athletic-field resurfacing are planned at multiple schools.
Buckner also told the board that, starting this school year, the State Education Department requires boards to adopt ex officio student members. He said the district will have board-appointed ex officio members from North and South high schools starting in September, and is awaiting an appointee from Phillips School. Those student members will have the rights and privileges afforded by New York State for ex officio members to speak on agenda items and ask questions.
The superintendent framed the summer work as preparatory for the upcoming year and said the district will present more detail at walkthroughs in August and in regular communications with families and staff.
