TDOT signal to activate at Eddy Road and Bell Buckle Lane; road widening, turn lanes planned

The Bedford County highway superintendent told the Board of Commissioners that a new traffic signal at the intersection of Eddy Road and Bell Buckle Lane on U.S. 231 will switch from flashing to full operation at 9 a.m. tomorrow, and that state work will widen the roadway and add turn lanes.
"That signal will be a full blown signal, starting tomorrow morning at 09:00," the highway superintendent said, adding that the road-widening work to add turn lanes is scheduled to begin in August and that installation of additional signal poles could take about six months, likely completing in spring.
The superintendent said the 231 section affected will carry a 45 mph speed limit as required by the Tennessee Department of Transportation for that class of road. He cited safety concerns and said he had requested the signal about four years ago and that there have been "at least, I think, 6 fatalities" since the request.
Commissioners asked about signage and speed limits. The superintendent said TDOT plans a new signage package extending about a half mile along the approaches to the intersection, and that message boards and flashing solar signs were in place to notify drivers ahead of the activation.
Why it matters: The activation and subsequent construction aim to change traffic flow and safety on a busy county corridor; the speed-limit decision and timing of physical upgrades could affect commuting patterns and local crash risk.
