Eric Carey, identified at the meeting as president of the El Segundo Kiwanis Club, said the club and a fellow member, Barry, met with district leadership and used a “Shark Tank”–style pitch process with principals to select proposals. Carey said, “we were able to donate $45,000 to the school district,” and that “it’s 30,000 in the first installment. We have to wait till our big fundraiser, the Fair on Main is over in September to have the other 15, but we will have it.”
Dr. Johnson introduced the Kiwanis representatives and thanked the club for the gift. Board members and staff expressed appreciation for community fundraising and noted the donation would support legacy projects at the two campuses.
The board did not take formal action on the donation during the meeting; the presentation served as a public acknowledgment of the gift and an opportunity for district and club representatives to be photographed.
