Hot Springs seeks FLAP funds to add gateway and vehicular wayfinding signs

The City of Hot Springs intends to apply for Federal Lands Access Program funding for phase 3 of its citywide wayfinding initiative, staff told the Board of Directors on July 8.
Sarah Delozier, presenting the item, said phase 3 focuses on gateway monument signs and large-scale vehicular directional signage along major corridors to guide travelers to Hot Springs National Park, historic downtown and regional federal recreation areas. The total estimated cost is $412,500; the FLAP request would be $350,055 with a voluntary local contribution of $62,445. Delozier said the local match is not required by FLAP but improves competitiveness.
Delozier told the board the city has budgeted $14,280 in 2025 for design updates with Merge (the original system designer) and that the city intends to incorporate the trademarked Visit Hot Springs “America’s First Resort” tagline into signage. Staff cited 9,000,000 annual visitors to Hot Springs as rationale for improved vehicular navigation and visitor safety. Renderings and schematic locations (State Highway 270 West, Highway 7 South, Highway 70 East) are included in the packet; staff said final placement is under discussion.
Staff recommended authorization to apply; the board will consider formal action at the July 15 meeting.
