Winnsboro Pickleball group tells council membership has surged and thanks city for facility use

Brian Smith, speaking for Winnsboro Pickleball, told the City Council the group has grown rapidly and thanked the council for allowing play at the Civic Center and for the new painted courts at Lions Park.
Smith said the group began about three years ago in the Rock Gym and later moved to the Civic Center. Players come from nearby towns including Emory, Pittsburg, Mount Pleasant, Quitman, Mineola and Sulphur Springs. Smith said the group now has roughly 450 members and typically draws 35 to 50 players on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday sessions.
Smith described running a small local rewards program and noted volunteers and EDC assistance with lights and nets. He told the council the group understands regular rental priorities: “Money comes first. And whenever there's a rent, whenever it's rented, we understand that, so that's basically, normal setup,” Smith said. He thanked the council for backing the group and allowing use of the Civic Center when available.
No formal request for funding or a change in city policy was recorded in the public comment. The council did not take action on the presentation during the meeting; the remarks were recorded as public comment.
