Southborough committee reviews course capital priorities: irrigation, cart path, tee complex and tree plantings

Committee members said the irrigation project work is ongoing and that previously approved funding remains in place; John reported he is obtaining three quotes for the cart path and other repair work. “John's getting 3 quotes,” the chair said, and committee members explained that once three estimates are in hand the management company or the town will decide procurement steps.
On the tee and cart‑path work, the committee discussed prioritizing projects and presenting a consolidated list to the select board to secure funding. The chair said Mark Burple had asked for a prioritized list of projects; the committee agreed fencing, signage and tree plantings to reduce errant shots should be high priorities alongside resurfacing and cart‑path repairs.
Members also discussed costs and specifications for tree plantings. The committee noted that larger, 12‑foot trees would cost more than smaller specimens and that installation costs can increase if site preparation is more complex. A committee member said installing six trees along the right side of the third fairway was a probable target to encourage players to aim left and reduce balls crossing into neighboring yards.
Other items: the Audubon butterfly‑sanctuary listing remains on the committee agenda pending follow‑up; staff had no update on certification progress at the meeting. Committee members also mentioned the maintenance building and past work by student volunteers as items to include on longer‑term maintenance and capital plans.
What’s next: the committee agreed to prepare a longer‑range plan to present to the select board, to assemble cost estimates for trees and tee work, to finalize scope for cart‑path quotes and to return with a prioritized list at the next meeting.
