Miami Beach honors teacher David Reese for Holocaust studies curriculum and survivor interviews

The City of Miami Beach on July 9 presented a certificate recognizing David Reese, an English language arts teacher at Miami Beach Senior High, for his work developing a Holocaust studies curriculum and student-led documentary projects.
Commissioner Dominguez read that Reese has taught for more than 25 years, including two decades at Miami Beach Senior High, and sponsors the school’s No Place For Hate Club. The proclamation noted the school’s “Names, Not Numbers” survivor documentary project, then in its fifth student-led production, and recounted recent student trips and exhibit work.
Reese told commissioners that the program places students in direct, in-depth interviews with Holocaust survivors after research and preparation. He said the experience is among “one of the most impactful experiences” of a student’s education and noted planned travel to Poland with human-rights educators to deepen Holocaust education and anti-hate strategies.
The presentation was ceremonial. Commissioners said they are considering continued support for the program but no new funding or contract was approved on the floor during the meeting.
