At a recent Sandusky Recreation Board meeting, staff described the summer events calendar, volunteer needs for Ironman 70.3 Ohio and community outreach plans.

Jason, recreation staff, said Movies by the Bay ran several recent shows despite heat and isolated drizzle; recent films included Moana 2 and an upcoming showing of Air Bud, with a local “golden greeters” group expected to attend. He reported the Stars & Stripes community celebration and the 5K drew a record field of more than 300 participants.

Jason said Ironman 70.3 Ohio will begin setup around the pier and marina and that the race itself is scheduled for the 20th; staff will distribute traffic‑impact information through city channels and via mailers to affected properties. He said Crystal is the volunteer coordinator for Ironman and that the swim start still needs four volunteers; staff will circulate a volunteer link and waiver for signups.

Other events staff noted include Touch‑a‑Truck on Aug. 5 (rescheduled after last year’s rainout) and Community Collaboration Day on Aug. 15 from 2 to 5 p.m., which will include resource tables, giveaways and food vendors. Jason invited board members to help at the community event and encouraged them to attend field trips and movie nights.

Board members questioned scheduling for events at alternate parks (for example, moving Movies by the Bay to neighborhood parks). Jason said Movies by the Bay’s primary location remains the pier but that the city has used portable screens at other venues in prior years.

No formal votes were taken on events; staff said they will share volunteer signups, traffic plans and final schedules through the city’s usual outreach channels.
