Drug and Alcohol Commission confirms forfeiture rule after multiple absences

Laredo — The Drug and Alcohol Commission discussed member absences and enforcement of its bylaws during Thursday’s meeting and confirmed the existing rule that four absences in a year result in forfeiture of a commission seat.

Attendance rule confirmed: Commission members asked whether forfeiture occurs after three consecutive absences or after four absences in a year. The chair, Miss Angie, confirmed the rule: “4 in general,” and added, “Your fourth one, you forfeit your position on the commission.” The commission said several seats have already been forfeited under that standard.

Notification and appeals: Members asked whether the commission must provide formal written notice before forfeiture. A staff speaker said the practice of sending formal written notice had been used in the past but is not being followed at this time. Commission staff said they would forward questions to city and county liaisons and that affected members could contact their appointing city council member or commissioner to express continued interest.

Why it matters: Commissioners said the rule affects quorum and membership for upcoming meetings and that potential replacements have already expressed interest. Members asked staff to send formal emails when appropriate and to confirm whether the county will adopt the same standard.
