Council finalizes rezoning for two Cedar Street parcels to allow highway commercial use

The Atoka City Council voted unanimously to adopt two rezoning ordinances that change properties on West Cedar Street from residential zoning to C-2 highway commercial.
Ordinance 6 10 approves rezoning of 412 West Cedar Street from R-2 general residential to C-2 highway commercial; staff said the rezoning was contingent on the property owner entering a real estate purchase contract for commercial use and that the contract is now in place so the ordinance can finalize the sale. Ordinance 6 11 rezones 442 West Cedar Street from R-1 single-family residential to C-2 and was described as part of the same transaction though under a different owner.
Council discussion clarified that the rezoning process had been considered at prior meetings (a public hearing was previously held) and that finalizing the ordinance was necessary for the purchasers to close on their contracts. One councilmember noted the earlier meeting dates where the rezoning had been discussed and approved at public hearings.
Both ordinances were approved on roll call with unanimous votes. The council did not adopt additional conditions beyond those already stated in the ordinances; staff said the rezoning will allow the purchasers to move forward with planned commercial development on the highway corridor.
