Georgette refrigeration overhaul underway; city says project on track for season start

City recreation staff updated the Board of Aldermen on July 7 about the Georgette refrigeration replacement project. Staff said equipment has been ordered and the first payment to the vendor has been made. Demolition of the existing system began the prior Monday.
During header demolition crews discovered a pipe that had sheared and removed it; staff said its failure at a later date could have released roughly 3,000 gallons of brine into the facility’s header ditch, so the early discovery averted a potential environmental incident.
Contractors were removing all ammonia from the system through a subcontractor and the electric department was scheduled to make the system safe to allow remaining demolition to continue. City staff said they will use the outage to perform in-house upgrades to lighting, paint and other efficiency measures.
