Joint Committee on Employment Relations elects Rep. Corey and Sen. Robinson as co-chairs

Members of the Joint Committee on Employment Relations elected Representative Corey and Senator Robinson as co-chairs by voice vote after nominations during the committee meeting.

The election matters because the committee’s co-chair practice guides how it schedules statutorily required meetings to review collective bargaining outcomes and other business; committee members said the co-chair arrangement has alternated chamber and party representation in recent years.

Committee chair Representative Ormsby opened the nominations and nominated Representative Corey to represent the House Republican caucus as a co-chair. Representative Fitzgibbon nominated Senator Robinson for the senate co-chair position. Both nominees indicated willingness to serve.

Nonpartisan staff confirmed a quorum before the election, reporting Representative Ormsby, Representative Chambers, Representative Corey, Representative Fitzgibbon, Senator Robinson and Senator Gildan present. Representative Ormsby called for those in favor to say “aye” or raise their electronic hand; committee members responded “Aye,” and the chair declared the co-chairs elected.

Ormsby described the committee’s practical schedule and statutory timing for meetings, saying the panel typically meets after bargaining and before session and that the position carries a time constraint tied to presentation of bargaining results to the Legislature.

Action recorded: the committee elected co-chairs by voice vote; members present voted in favor and the motion passed. The committee had no additional business and adjourned.
