Public commenters urge action on immigration enforcement, housing and institutional accountability

Public commentators at the July 8 Seattle City Council meeting addressed several recurring themes, including immigration enforcement and Sanctuary policies, policing responses to protests, workplace and institutional mistreatment, and housing and redevelopment.
Rose, a remote commenter, urged the council to ensure Seattle Police Department compliance with sanctuary policies or to adopt clearer local laws, saying, "Either there needs to be a directive to have SPD follow the laws that are on the books, or rather, we need to have a law that that makes it very clear of what is and is not allowed." Bennett Halston, who was arrested in a February 2024 sit-in protest, asked the council to correct official characterizations of the event and said, "I think the truth matters." Halston said security footage and his own GoPro do not support police descriptions of a violent outburst.
Other speakers described personal harms. Courtney Holdhouse described alleged retaliation and mistreatment by state systems and requested assistance and accountability from institutions she named; David Haines and Alberto Alvarez spoke about housing and economic concerns, including redevelopment and appointment decisions affecting District 5.
Speakers included in-person and remote participants; the public comment period was limited to items on the agenda, the introduction and referral calendar, and the council work program.
