Board approves assistant farm manager role to bolster farm and facilities operations

The Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to create an assistant farm manager position to provide hands-on oversight of farm operations and to support facilities staff.
Superintendent Dr. Lincoln Hoeger told trustees the school’s expanding agricultural programs have increased the workload for the facilities director; the new position, he said, will report to the facilities director and will not replace the farm manager role. Trustees approved the position after a discussion of duties, supervision and budget impact.
Facilities Director Mister Smith said the job description was prepared with input from school leaders and that the assistant farm manager would supervise farm technicians and student workers, coordinate with vocational instructors and participate in department meetings. Smith described the role as aimed at improving day‑to‑day oversight rather than changing instructional supervision.
The superintendent said the FY26 budget as adopted will support the new position and that the school plans to eliminate an existing lead farm tech stipend and roll that compensation into the new salaried role, which he said would avoid an adverse effect on classroom instruction budgets.
Trustees voted to approve the new position; board members asked administrators to return with salary-range benchmarking and implementation details as the school moves to fill the post.
