Trustee Smith moved to adopt the appointment process; Trustee Preciado seconded. Trustee Robertson recorded an abstention; the motion carried.
The superintendent’s presentation estimated a special election would cost approximately $200,000 to the district and called the appointment process a faster, lower-cost option. Under the plan the appointed member would serve through the next regularly scheduled election cycle in November 2026.
The board discussed interview formats (nomination/second or ranked-choice) depending on the number of applicants and said staff would issue a press release and post application materials on the district website and social media once the process begins.
