The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday presented awards to members of the Riverside County Youth Commission, honored student Spirit Award winners and recognized Family Is All That Matters, a nonprofit that provides mentoring and tutoring for students in multiple districts.
Supervisor Jose Medina led a plaque presentation recognizing long-time Youth Commission volunteer Joe Matthews and praised the Youth Advisory Councils that operate in each of the county's five supervisorial districts. Youth Commission coordinators and student commissioners from across the county were introduced and several students who earned "Spirit Awards" and scholarships were recognized at the dais.
Family Is All That Matters (Faidam) was also recognized in a separate presentation. Supervisors Medina and Gutierrez credited the nonprofit with providing mentoring, tutoring and sports-based supports, and for working with students identified for intensive intervention (commonly referred to in schools as "tier 2" and "tier 3" students). Speakers highlighted seven students from District One who received academic certificates.
Supervisors and nonprofit leaders emphasized the role of mentoring, after-school programming and local partnerships in keeping students engaged. The board used the presentations to urge parents and students to apply for Youth Commission openings and to spotlight volunteer coordinators and local school partnerships.
