Auburn council adopts ordinance creating permanent homelessness committee

The ordinance, which had a first reading on June 16, 2025, was amended before the July 7 vote to add an additional position for a veteran services provider and then approved by roll call. The council opened the item for public comment; none was offered. The clerk conducted the roll call and the motion was adopted.
Mayor Jeff Hyman introduced the ordinance for final consideration. Councilor Gary moved adoption; Councilor Cowen seconded. During the roll call, Councilors Weisner, Walker, Gary, Whiting, Cowen and Milks recorded affirmative votes. The clerk recorded the motion as adopted. The ordinance as presented will create the standing committee within Chapter 2 of the Auburn code and includes the added veteran services position.
Council discussion on the ordinance was brief at the July 7 meeting; the council previously amended the draft at first reading to add the veteran-services seat. No public testimony was offered before the vote.
The new committee is now part of the city code and will proceed to staffing and chartering consistent with the ordinance language.
