The Cobb County Board of Commissioners on July 8 approved several Department of Transportation contracts for road and traffic-system work, and authorized intergovernmental agreements for preliminary engineering on two corridor projects.
Drew Ressler, speaking for the county Department of Transportation, recommended award of construction and repair contracts that included a $995,561.60 contract with Backbone Infrastructure LLC for Shallowford Road at Gordy Parkway West (project B2306), a $97,459.51 contract with Chatfield Contracting Inc. for drainage repairs on Aspen Wood Court (project B22145), a $179,684 contract with Advanced Road Construction LLC for drainage repairs on Stonywood Circle (project B22170) and a $684,960 contract with Smart Road Technology LLC to replace damaged traffic-signal poles at 11 locations (project B2593). The board moved to authorize corresponding budget transactions and to authorize the chair to execute the necessary documents.
Commissioners also approved memorandum-of-agreement actions with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to begin preliminary engineering design work on the Big Shaney Road widening (Cobb project B2431) and the George Busby Parkway Corridor trail (Cobb project B2438). The board approved related amendments to the county's framework agreement with the Town Center Community Improvement District for both projects.
Commissioner Burrell moved the first contract approvals; subsequent motions on the remaining items were seconded and all votes carried 4-0. The county clerk recorded the motions as carried with four affirmative votes.
Why it matters: the package includes both immediate repairs (drainage, traffic-signal hardware) and planning steps (GDOT preliminary engineering agreements) that advance longer-term roadway widening and trail projects. The board authorized budget adjustments to cover the awards and gave the chair authority to finalize contracts.
Details and next steps: contractors will proceed under the awarded contracts and county staff will execute the GDOT project framework and memoranda of agreement; the presentations did not include construction start dates or timelines, which were not specified at the meeting.
