A commenter at a Peachtree City public announcement urged residents to supervise children at pools and lakes, use appropriate life jackets and monitor weather apps while on Lake Peachtree, Lake Kedron and Lake McIntosh this summer.
“The leading cause of death for children 1 to 4 years old, is drowning,” the commenter said, and advised parents and guardians to “make sure you're always supervising your children” and that they “have the proper life jacket.”
The commenter also advised swimmers to “know your limitations on your physical strength on swimming,” to “always swim with a buddy if possible,” and to tell family or friends where they will be swimming in case of emergency. The announcement noted that local businesses in Peachtree City offer swim lessons.
On weather safety, the commenter warned that this summer has seen “a lot of thunderstorms, a lot of lightning,” and told people on Lake Peachtree, Lake Kedron or Lake McIntosh to keep a weather app on their phone so they can leave the water if storms approach.
The remarks were delivered as part of a short public-safety announcement; no formal actions or policy changes were proposed or adopted during the remarks.
