Council approves multiple zoning map amendments to rezone pockets of commercial/industrial land to residential

The Kankakee City Council on Monday approved two zoning map amendments that reclassify multiple parcels in separate areas from commercial or industrial to residential zoning, following 4-0 recommendations from the Planning Board.
Director of Planning King summarized both petitions: PB2025-6-2 covers properties on North Chicago Avenue, East Ferris Street, North Greenwood Avenue and North East Willow Street (and specific PINs) moving from commercial/industrial to residential; PB2025-6-3 covers parcels on North Alma Avenue, North May Avenue and a listed PIN moving to residential zoning. Planning staff and the planning board recommended approval for both measures at their June 17 meeting.
Council members moved to suspend the rules to allow final passage the same night; each ordinance passed on roll call with recorded votes of 12 ayes, 0 nays.
Ending: Director King said the amendments are part of ongoing zoning-cleanup work to align the code with current land use; the council approved the rezonings after the planning board recommendation.
