Concord School District leaders and staff reported steady progress on the Concord High School heating, ventilation and air-conditioning replacement, with rooftop units installed and work on schedule toward an August substantial-completion target.
Superintendent Murphy said Matt, acting as the district's owner's project representative, reported the project was "about 65% complete." Matt told the board 19 new rooftop units are in place, crews used a planned power outage for wiring, and a backup generator maintained critical systems during testing. "The new system is capable... in some cases, more than 4 fresh air exchanges per hour in all of the spaces," Matt said.
The board heard that the project has required multiple contractor crews onsite since June 17 and will continue through substantial completion, currently targeted for Aug. 18. District staff said refrigerant delivery and final activation are planned for spring or summer 2026. Matt also said the district will perform a second planned shutdown on Aug. 29 to inspect and measure a questioned 3,000-amp breaker with the manufacturer's representative; power will be restored afterward.
Board members asked whether the current pace is ahead of schedule; staff responded the project is on schedule and credited extensive preconstruction work—18 months of engineering, permitting and low-voltage prewiring—for enabling two shifts of work and faster installation.
The superintendent and staff emphasized continuity of operations during outages: generators supported servers, internet and alarms during the recent outage and the district reported no service interruptions during the first day of extended school year programming.
Discussion items the board did not decide at the meeting included the timing of further shutdowns and exact commissioning dates pending manufacturer deliveries and breaker replacement. No formal board motion or vote was taken on the HVAC item at this meeting.
The district said it will return to the board with updates as the manufacturer measurements and refrigerant delivery dates firm up.
