Council approves emergency capital expense for Pewaukee Public Library water softener

Pewaukee Common Council members approved an emergency capital expense June 16 to replace a failed water softener at the Pewaukee Public Library and to cover up to 20% of the replacement cost, not to exceed $1,414.
The library director told the council the water softener failed and the library board reviewed three quotes before approving the lowest. The board classified the replacement as a capital repair under the city–village joint library agreement and requested 20% of the project cost from the council. The speaker said the replacement includes a valve bypass that has frozen and required the assistance of the fire department when staff needed to isolate the device.
Council members noted the amount was small and routine within the joint-agreement process; one member asked whether the softener would be leased or purchased and the director said the board opted to purchase, with ongoing salt delivery and salt costs charged to the library’s operating budget.
A council member moved to approve the expenditure and the motion passed on a voice vote. The council directed staff to coordinate with the library for payment processing and to follow the joint library agreement’s procedures for capital repairs and reimbursements.
The library will proceed with the replacement and handle operating costs for salt and resupply under its operating budget going forward.
