Shallon Rogers, executive director of Charlie’s Wishes for Veterans, used the public comment period at Elyria’s July 7 council meeting to introduce the nonprofit and request community support.
Rogers said the organization grants wishes to veterans transitioning into retirement, with costs typically ranging from about $100 to a few thousand dollars depending on the need. Examples given included installing grab bars, repairing a roof, completing a deck, or helping a veteran attend a family event.
“Every wish we grant is in honor of the 2 men who inspired not only me, but many others,” Rogers said, explaining the nonprofit was formed in memory of two relatives who served in the U.S. military. She said in a few months the group had completed almost a dozen wishes and that it relies entirely on community donations and volunteer support.
Council members thanked Rogers and encouraged residents and businesses to contact the organization with donations or referrals. Rogers said she is an Elyria native and plans local outreach, including an open house the coming Saturday. No formal city funding request was made during the public comment.
