Aberdeen council grants indefinite extension for sidewalk at 2225 North Roosevelt

The City of Aberdeen council on July 7 granted an indefinite extension to a property owner at 2225 North Roosevelt for constructing a required sidewalk under the city’s ordinance (referenced in the meeting as 46‑127/46‑128).

City staff and the property owner presented background information and a written request (dated June 24, 2025) asking for an indefinite extension because there are no adjoining sidewalks immediately north or south of the lot and the adjacent east side of the road contains a widely used bike path. City staff noted the parcel has curb and gutter but no sidewalk on the west side of Roosevelt in that stretch.

Staff advised the council that under the ordinance an indefinite extension must be recorded in the minutes and that the requirement ends automatically if the property is sold; Ron (staff) explained, “If the property is sold, then the extension terminates and that person would then have to come in and request either another indefinite extension or get notice from us that it has to install the sidewalk.”

Council members discussed enforcement and noted the city has no active system to monitor property sales for this purpose; staff said such matters would be pursued if they come to the city’s attention. The council also confirmed that if the sidewalk were constructed, the property owner would be responsible for snow removal; staff said the city clears the bike path on the east side through Parks and Recreation.

Outcome: The council approved the property owner’s request and recorded an indefinite extension in the meeting minutes. The extension is subject to the city ordinance’s permanence rules: if the property sells the obligation to install the sidewalk may revive for the new owner unless the council grants another extension.
