Hampshire County officials said Tuesday they received a $7,681 bid to convert space at the Springfield Volunteer Rescue Squad building to support 24-hour staffing and scheduled a special meeting Friday to consider the work.
Chief Hamrick (title stated as chief) told commissioners the work would add two bunk rooms, a shower and washer/dryer hookups so the county could begin 24-hour staffing there, with a target start date of July 3 if the renovations proceed and the contractor can complete work in about four weeks.
“We have the funding in our no fee account, so I just need to get approval,” Chief Hamrick said, noting the county had already hired staff and planned precepting to prepare them for a July start. He said only one formal bid was returned; that contractor is a local responder and the chief called the quoted price reasonable.
Commissioners said they could not act at the meeting and asked the clerk to post a special meeting for Friday at 9 a.m. to consider the proposal. No contract was executed at the Tuesday meeting.
Chief Hamrick also said Springfield’s summer population increases substantially and that the county’s plan aims to ensure adequate EMS coverage through peak months. The chief described the contractor as a local Capon Bridge business and said the contractor expected to complete the work in approximately four weeks if approved and started promptly.
