Hampshire County seeks intergovernmental allies in opposition to proposed regional transmission lines

The Hampshire County Commission voted June 10 to invite adjoining and affected local governments to discuss cooperation in opposition to proposed regional electrical transmission projects.
Commissioner Brian Brill introduced the measure as a way to move from a previously adopted county position to a coordinated intergovernmental stance. Commissioners discussed recent local and neighboring jurisdictions’ expressions of opposition and said they wanted to explore a multi-jurisdictional approach to advocacy. Commissioner Mance volunteered to draft a letter for the commission’s review; Commissioner Brill (identified in the motion) was authorized to make phone calls and otherwise act on the commission’s behalf to contact adjoining governments.
The motion passed by voice vote. The commission said the letter would be circulated for input before being finalized and sent to neighboring counties and municipalities that the commissioners identify as affected.
