The city director told the Duarte Planning Commission that Viarta Supermarkets will move into the former Best Buy space in the city, restoring a full-service supermarket to Duarte.
“It's a tremendous victory for the city,” the director said, noting that the company is expanding rapidly in Southern California and that a full-service supermarket has been a longtime community priority after the city lost several supermarkets seven to eight years ago. The director said the projected opening is “sometime next summer,” subject to significant tenant improvements.
The director described the conversion as a major investment, estimating tenant improvements for a grocery store build-out at more than $10,000,000. He said the former Best Buy shell will require electrical and freezer work and interior construction to install multiple food-preparation stations similar to other Viarta locations.
Commissioners offered brief congratulations on the announcement; no formal action was taken. The director said he was available to answer questions about the project timeline and details.
