Solano County Arts Council begins cultural-district application; Vallejo commissioners offer collaboration

Solano County Arts Council staff told the Vallejo Arts and Culture Commission they have begun work on an application for the California Arts Council Cultural Districts Grants Program, and commissioners offered support and collaboration.

Christina Walkup, administrative assistant to Solano County Arts Council executive director Carmen Slack, said the council has begun compiling a cultural-asset inventory and defining district boundaries; the application period closes Aug. 7. TJ Walker, representing the Vallejo chapter, said local groups already operate recurring arts events such as the art walk and expressed interest in partnering.

Commissioners discussed using the existing downtown-specific plan Arts and Entertainment District as the logical core of a cultural-district application and noted that CAC funding for this program is modest (Walkup said $10,000 is available for the grant). By consensus the commission asked Vice Chair Vidor and Commissioner Allen to work with Solano County Arts Council on the application and requested that the arts council present an update to the commission prior to the grant deadline. Staff said it would share contact information and coordinate any presentation.

Commissioner Allen said it makes sense for Solano County Arts Council to be the applicant because the city lacks a matching nonprofit designated for regranting; he also recommended centering the district in downtown for feasibility and impact. Commissioners discussed boundaries and potential overlap with existing historic districts and noted the Downtown Specific Plan already identifies an arts-and-entertainment area that could serve as the application footprint.

Next steps: Vice Chair Vidor and Commissioner Allen will collaborate with Solano County Arts Council on the draft application; staff will arrange a presentation to the commission before the Aug. 7 application deadline.
