Councilman Wilson announced July 1 that he will ask the city clerk to poll members of the public safety subcommittee to schedule meetings to review safety procedures and protocols for city employees, City Hall and field staff.
Wilson cited recent violent incidents elsewhere in the country as the impetus for the review, telling the council: "Rather than waiting for some sort of tragic tragedy of that nature to happen here in Gadsden, it's time for us to do a comprehensive review of what our safety procedures and protocols are." He referenced an incident in Idaho in which two firefighters were killed and a third injured, and the 2021 murders of legislators in Minnesota, as examples of the kinds of events prompting the review.
Wilson said the effort will be collaborative: he expects to work with "the mayor's office and several members of the city staff" and anticipates the process will require a series of meetings to reach workable recommendations. He described the focus as both safety at City Hall and safety for employees who interact with the public in the field.
The announcement is a direction to begin a review process; the transcript records no formal motion, vote, or assignment of budget or external consultants. Wilson asked the city clerk to poll subcommittee members to schedule the first meeting.
