Whitestown Fire Board reviews June training, recruit graduation and EMS workload

Whitestown — The Whitestown Fire Board on July 2 heard monthly operations and EMS reports from the fire department, including public-education events, the graduation of most recruits from the Northside Fire Academy, training-hours totals and year-to-date EMS billing and run statistics.
Fire Chief Cunningham told the board the department attended ribbon-cuttings and community “Touch a Truck” events in June, and that the Northside Fire Academy graduated six of seven recruits. “We will start EMT school on July 14 … and then we will have seven complete, working on shift after that point,” the chief said. He reported the academy program included more than 3,600 total training hours and more than 120 live-fire training hours for the class.
The chief reported the department logged 2,191 training hours in June across crews (not including recruit hours) and summarized certifications earned by the new members, including firefighter I/II, hazardous-materials awareness and NIMS courses. He said the department is working with county partners on a mass-casualty exercise and on a countywide standard operating procedure for such events.
On EMS activity, the board was told June run volume was 155 calls and year-to-date 988 runs, about 43 runs (4.3%) fewer than the same point last year. June month-to-date EMS revenue was $37,509.56, bringing the year-to-date total to over $233,000. The chief also said IU North Hospital provided obstetrics training at Station 272 and that staff have met with long-term care directors to maintain relationships with frequent-call facilities.
Board members asked about Narcan usage and whether police-car administrations are captured in the department’s reporting. The chief said he would attempt to compare the department’s Narcan usage with neighboring jurisdictions and to check whether EMS reports account for police administrations; “I can attempt to do that. I believe the state has a resource of NARCAN usage,” he said, and added, “I’ll get back and report back to you guys next meeting.”
The board did not take any formal action on operational items during the report; the presentations were received for the record.
