Board reappoints local members, approves public defender contract and hires elections supervisor

The Appling County Board of Commissioners handled a series of governance items including board appointments, a public defender contract approval and an election‑supervisor hire.

Commissioners nominated and moved to send three names for a hospital authority vacancy and approved a reappointment and new appointment to the county’s defects board. Commissioner nominations included Jimmy Twiggs and Kathy Mitchell for the hospital authority; Amy Rediger was nominated for the defects board and Carlos Ruth was reappointed to another board seat.

The board approved the public defender contract as presented. The county manager explained the county’s pro rata share will increase modestly to cover additional staff the district attorney’s office requested the county assume; the contract start date was discussed as July 1. A commissioner moved to approve the public defender contract and the motion was seconded by another commissioner.

Following an executive session called to discuss an investigation and real‑estate matters, the board voted to hire Sandy Domino as full‑time elections supervisor at pay grade K‑33 (annualized $50,005.62) and also set an hourly rate for related duties. The board recorded the motion and second and approved the hire.

Other administrative items included renewal discussion for a lease on the Pineland building (a lease covering a downtown main‑street office) and the board heard a written update from the Board of Elections thanking county departments and election staff for support during a recent primary and noting a July 15 runoff to be held at the Extension building behind the library.

No ordinance or statutory change was proposed; the items were appointments, a contract approval, hiring, and routine lease administration.
