City leisure and public safety staff used the July 1 council meeting to outline centennial Fourth of July events and give safety guidance for the holiday.
Leisure Services Director Carl Langfield said the city will hold its 50th annual Fourth of July parade at 10 a.m. on Gillette Avenue, with fairway activities on the First Fairway beginning at 6 p.m. and live music and food trucks, and "the fireworks show starts at 09:15," he said. Langfield identified major sponsors and said the centennial schedule includes additional events this year.
Assistant Fire Chief Shane Salmon of the Temple Terrace Fire Department reviewed safety recommendations for grilling and consumer fireworks: "First, always grill outdoors. Never put a grill in your garage or in your home or your apartment. Keep grills away from anything that might be flammable... Never leave a lit grill unattended." Salmon added, "consumer fireworks can be dangerous and they can cause injury, especially to children," and urged residents to attend the community fireworks show as the safer option.
Langfield said fairway entertainment will include music by the Black Velvet Band and DJ services; he noted sponsors and asked residents to bring lawn chairs and sunscreen. The announcements and safety guidance were informational and no council action was required.
