Temple Terrace approves school resource officer placement at Greco Middle School

The City Council on July 1 approved a fiscal‑year 2025–26 agreement with the School Board of Hillsborough County to assign a full‑time school resource officer (SRO) to Greco Middle School and a designated Temple Terrace patrol sergeant to coordinate safety across four campuses.
Tampa Police Captain Jason Malave said the school board agreed to reimburse the city $135,967, paid in two semiannual installments, "This amount will cover the cost that will cover half of the salaries of both assigned officers, their fringe benefits, and vehicle costs," Malave said. He added the arrangement will not increase the department's full‑time equivalent count in year one.
Councilmember Fernandez asked about prior concerns when a Temple Terrace officer previously served at Greco and whether the school board would limit transparency. Malave said the district has been receptive in recent coordination efforts and that the city's community liaison unit has developed relationships with school principals and staff. He noted Greco will receive both an SRO and a school‑provided security officer and said the two will work together.
The council voted to adopt the resolution; the clerk recorded no nays. The agreement continues the city's partnership with the school board to support student safety and well‑being.
