Will County committee hears federal reconciliation update; member urges adding Asian carp to federal agenda

The Will County Legislative Committee on July 1 received an update on the Senate’s budget reconciliation bill and discussed adding Asian carp to the county’s federal legislative agenda.
KP Pratt, a staff member, told the committee the Senate had passed a budget reconciliation bill that he estimated would "probably cost about $3,300,000,000,000." He said the bill includes changes to SNAP and Medicaid and had moved to the U.S. House, where he said the House Rules Committee was meeting and the bill was expected to come to the floor the next day. "Vice President Vance had to, cast the tie breaking vote," Pratt said, describing a 51–50 Senate vote.
The update mattered to committee members because the bill’s provisions would have local effects, committee members said. Julie, a committee member, asked that Asian carp be included in Will County’s federal agenda, calling Will County waterways "critical" and saying the issue "deserves to be, have an individual mentioned here in our agenda." Pratt offered to draft language for the committee to consider and said staff could insert it into the agenda after the board’s approval.
Dan Butler, a committee member, asked specifically whether the $3.3 trillion figure included costs related to SNAP and Medicaid and about provisions mentioned in public debate, including work rules for Medicaid and dietary restrictions for SNAP purchases. Pratt answered that the figure was a "net cost," that it did include SNAP and Medicaid, and that "the health food or healthy non junk food was not allowed in the senate bill." He also said the Medicaid work requirement would apply to ages "from 19 to 64."
Committee members said they planned to review the federal legislative agenda at an upcoming meeting and to consider any suggested additions, including language on Asian carp. The chair asked members to forward drafting suggestions so staff could prepare proposed language for committee approval.
The committee approved minutes from the June 3 meeting by roll call earlier in the session and adjourned at the end of the agenda.
