Westfield parks director reports summer programs growth and Simon Moon Phase 2 bidding

Chris, the parks director, reported to the Westfield Parks and Recreation Board on July 2 that summer programming and events are drawing substantial public attendance and that Simon Moon Phase 2 has gone to bid.
Chris said the department offered more than 30 programs at Grand Junction in the first half of summer, including movies in the park, creek stomps, Workout Wednesdays and a wiffle ball program. "He's also beginning to start conversations with a group here in Westfield to help provide recreation and social activities for adults with developmental disabilities," Chris said about the new program manager, John Capes.
Chris reported the department supported four Pacers watch parties in Grand Junction Plaza during the playoffs; attendance on those evenings ranged from about 500 to 750 people, he said. The farmers market is seeing about 1,200 to 1,500 people on Thursdays, and concerts have been attended by "anywhere from 2,000 to 3,500 people," he said.
On the Simon Moon project, Chris said Phase 1 is largely complete and open to the public through mid-September, when a portion will close for Phase 2 work. Phase 2 has gone to bid; staff held an initial bidders meeting attended by eight firms and expects a competitive bid opening in mid-August. "We will have a contract in front of you come September," Chris said.
Board members offered thanks and praise for staff work and use of the plaza. No formal actions were taken on these program updates during the meeting.
