Owners of a local beekeeping business presented a proposal June 3 for a small retail and beekeeping support facility in Lake Barrington and said they hope the village will approve construction permits when the formal application is filed.

The presenters said the business has operated for about 10 years and manages roughly 200 hives spread north of Lake Barrington through Barrington and North Barrington, with two additional employees and three principal operators. "It's a full time business for all three of us and we have two other employees as well," one presenter said.

Architectural drawings were shown to the board and trustees asked questions about permitting and wetland setbacks. The applicant said the proposed building would have a stone facade, native pollinator plantings and a landscape plan prepared by a consultant named Doreen. The presenters said they want the building to look "kind of a country feel" and to partner with local small businesses for complementary products.

President Berg and trustees emphasized the permitting process and environmental setbacks. "For those of you up here and maybe watching at home, the next step is the approval of the construction," the village president said. Trustees asked whether applicants had reviewed setback and wetland rules; the presenters said they had spoken with engineers and felt confident the site could accommodate the program.

Why it matters: the plan introduces a commercial-use site program tied to an agricultural activity (beekeeping) that may require site landscaping, stormwater and wetland setbacks and formal building permits.
