Selectmen approve four change-order items totaling about $23,970 for fire/highway project

The North Brookfield Board of Selectmen approved four proposed change-order items for the fire/highway building project that the board said were largely driven by code and inspector requests and by unforeseen deterioration of existing piping.
Selectmen voted to incorporate the following proposed change orders (PCOs) into change order number 10: PCO 32 revision 1 for $3,852.70 (apparatus lighting/exit lighting and an exit sign added to the original scope), PCO 31 for $408.80 (GFI breaker work requested by the electrical inspector), PCO 29 revision 4 for $17,330.83 (replacement of corroded vent piping for the heating system) and PCO 33 for $2,378.84 (additional electrical items, including GFI upgrades and conduit mounting).
A member of the committee said the electrical items were straightforward and appeared to have been omitted from the original scope, while the piping replacement was more disappointing but, after pursuing alternates, returning to the original plan was the best financial option. The board discussed contingency availability and outstanding open items remaining with the contractor and engineers; one selectman said the project was still within a range they expected before these additions.
A motion to approve the PCOs as listed passed after brief discussion and a voice vote.
Selectmen instructed staff to include the PCOs in the official change order package and to continue working with the contractor and engineering team to resolve remaining open items and manage contingency funds.
