Franklin commission sets categories, timeline for business awards; seeks nominations by August

The Franklin City Economic Development Commission on Friday reviewed and approved the nomination process for the city’s business awards, confirming categories, qualifying criteria and a timeline that calls for nominations ahead of the commission’s August meeting.
Commissioners confirmed award categories: Excellence in Business (large and small), Business Leader of the Year, Innovation and a mayoral “choice” award. The commission set the large/small business breakpoint at $10,000,000 in annual revenue and said nominees should generally have operated in Franklin for at least three years. Nomination materials include a short spreadsheet-style grid that asks nominators to record the nominee’s category and a short rationale addressing customer service, workforce development participation and other qualifying questions.
John (director) said the nomination form and judging grid will be circulated to aldermen and department heads to broaden the pool of nominees. Commissioners agreed nominations may re-nominate past nominees and that submitters should provide enough written rationale to allow the commission to evaluate candidates without requiring full interviews; staff will contact nominees when additional information is necessary.
Several attendees named potential nominees during the discussion: James Bild (State Farm Insurance) and developer Rick Przvala were suggested as examples of businesses and leaders that local commissioners are considering.
A motion to adopt the nomination process and schedule was made and carried. The commission instructed staff to email nomination instructions to council members and city department heads and to collect submissions in advance of the August meeting for review and selection.
