Guymon board approves variance to allow carport closer to street at 1012 Northeast Third Street

The City of Guymon Board of Adjustments on the evening of the meeting approved a variance allowing a carport at 1012 Northeast Third Street to be sited 11 feet from the street, rather than the 25-foot front setback normally required.
City planning staff told the board that the variance application was submitted on June 6 by Maria and that the standard setbacks in the McMurray Addition are 25 feet from the road and five feet from the side. Staff said the department mailed 40 notice letters and received zero protesting letters. Staff also reported there are roughly a dozen other carports in the area with front setbacks in the 10-to-15-foot range.
Board discussion was brief. A member moved to approve the variance and a second was made; the roll-call vote was unanimous in favor. Board of Adjustments members present included Montgomery, O'Blander, Lackey, Inks and Singletary. The board recorded the motion as carried.
Staff noted it had not measured every existing carport but that many appeared to predate current setback enforcement; staff did not provide construction or permit details for those existing carports. The applicant did not add information beyond the application when asked by the board.
The board’s approval applies only to the setback variance; any building permit, construction plans and other code requirements remain subject to normal review by city staff.
