Contractor protests SB1 street enhancements award, asks council to reconsider

Mike Mahler, representing Sequel Contractors, told the Huntington Park City Council during public comment that his firm had submitted a formal protest of the SB1 Street Enhancement Project award to a bidder identified in the agenda packet as Anin.
Mahler said Sequel followed the city's bidding rules and that the apparent awardee did not submit required bid paperwork, giving the apparent winner an unfair advantage. "If a bidder is required to turn in a specific document at time of bid, they must," Mahler said. He asked the council to remove the SB1 item from the agenda, have staff reevaluate the recommended award, and ultimately award the contract to Sequel as the lowest responsive and responsible bidder.
The public record for the night included Mahler's protest letter; Mahler said he had provided copies for the council. The council did not take an immediate vote on the protest during public comment; the item remained scheduled on the regular agenda for council consideration and staff follow-up.
