Prattville mayor urges study of transportation and preliminary engineering for possible new high school and CAC expansion

Mayor presented a proposal July 1 asking the Prattville City Council to fund and enter a partnership for a transportation infrastructure planning study to evaluate Old Ridge Road area for Central Alabama Community College’s new information-technology facility and a potential new Prattville high school.
The mayor told councilors the planning phase would examine traffic counts, roadway capacity, signal needs, utility relocation and preliminary engineering for a potential high school site near CAC’s campus on Old Ridge Road. ‘‘The transportation infrastructure planning phase will be a component of a larger examination of the potential of a new Prattville high school,’’ the mayor said on the record.
Councilors pressed for procedure and cost clarity before any authorization. Councilor Michael Whaley asked how the council would proceed without seeing a formal price: ‘‘I hope next meeting we could see some type of request for a resolution or ordinance come before us so that we can go ahead and support the decision to move forward with that study,’’ he said. Mayor and staff agreed to prepare paperwork and a recommended contract or fee schedule and return with a resolution for formal action.
Discussion vs. decision: The council did not approve funding or a contract at the July 1 meeting. The recorded direction was for executive staff to gather vendor information, prepare a proposed resolution and an estimated cost so the council can vote at a future meeting.
Next steps: City staff said they will develop a recommended scope, vendor options and a cost estimate and present a resolution with a proposed fee schedule for council consideration at a subsequent meeting.
