A Federal Way resident told the council on July 1 about recurring crashes in front of her home and asked the city for help assessing traffic‑safety measures at the intersection.
Elna Aki described repeated incidents at the driveway that joins 300th Avenue South and 20th Avenue South near Steel Lake. “On January 30, without the gate there, an intoxicated female drove a 100 and feet into the driveway, totaled her Lexus, and our 2019 Jeep Cherokee,” she told the council. Aki said an earlier crash had left a license plate on the gate and recounted a more recent crash involving an EV that totaled a truck and damaged the house.
Mayor Farrell directed city staff to follow up. He asked EJ (the city’s operations lead) to speak with Aki that night and suggested staff pull police accident reports and perform an engineering review ahead of a follow‑up report at the next council meeting. “Let's have a conversation about how they're routing traffic and if we're still on track,” staff said when discussing related commercial traffic issues in a different agenda item; for the Aki matter staff pledged a specific follow up.
The council did not take formal legislative action but assigned staff to investigate the incidents and to return with incident reports and possible engineering or enforcement options at the next meeting.
